What Is It?
A couple of free tools from esteemed plug in designer Steven Massey
HR Meter is a very accurate level meter that shows, peak, average and RMS. Pro Tools meters are horribly unreliable. This solves the problem
Listen is a plug in that takes over the whole screen with the very zen instruction set in large type “Listen”
Why I like it
The HR meter lets me see what’s going on. You can see oversampling errors that I couldn’t see before with just the pro tools meter. These are the kinds of clipping that make digital sound harsh. So being able to see them makes it much easier to fix that and in turn, your mixes sound more musical.
The Listen plug in is brilliant. I like it for its philosophical approach more than anything. It makes me think about using my ears instead of my eyes, which is a difficult habit to move away from.
Tips / Examples of Use
-I put the HR meter as the last plug in on my mix, right after the Crane Song Phoenix. Let’s me see overshoots much better than the (practically worthless) Pro Tools meters.
-put the listen plug in on the master fader and click on it when you need to keep your eyes from following the scroll bar. Keeps you paying attention to music instead of waveforms scrolling by
